How Safe are 220 Volt Microwave Oven Cooked Food?

Do a Google search about microwave safety and the engine will likely return content with frightening claims about the dangers of microwave oven cooking to human health. These claims, while scientific-sounding, are quite unfounded and oftentimes misguided. Most of the time, they are also the reason why many still distrust the device, despite it being a common fixture in households, office pantries, convenience stores, hotel rooms, airplanes, and even restaurants for decades now.

Used as per manufacturer instructions, microwave ovens are completely safe and definitely convenient for cooking and heating a variety of food items. However, this is not to say that potential exposure to microwaves is inexistent. Because of this, precaution must be taken so as to avoid thermal burns when handling microwaved food.

Food safety is a major concern for many who are unsure of the effects of microwave heating and cooking to what they are eating. To dispel nuke-related misconceptions, it is important that people realize that food heated or cooked in a microwave oven doesn't necessarily become radioactive. Neither does microwave energy remain in the food or in the oven cavity when the device is switched off.

As far as nutrition is concerned, because microwave ovens are able to cook food faster and with little water or fat added, food retains more of its nutrients than most other forms of cooking. While steaming is great in preserving food nutrients, microwaving is better if you want to retain vitamin activity.

The real danger in microwave cooking lies in the ability of the microwave energy to penetrate thicker pieces of food. Uneven cooking due to improper heating rates may lead to health risks if certain parts of the food are insufficiently heated to kill potentially harmful microorganisms. To avoid this, food cooked or heated in a microwave should be allowed to rest for several minutes after cooking so heat can be distributed better throughout the food.
